Why More Western Montana Homes Are Adding AC

Many houses here were built without air conditioning because summers used to be short and nights cooled off fast. Now hot stretches last longer, and wildfire smoke often means windows stay shut exactly when you'd want them open. A cooling system lets you keep the house closed, comfortable and filtered through smoke season.

Central AC or a Heat Pump?

If you have a furnace and ductwork, a central air conditioner is the traditional add-on. A heat pump uses the same ductwork and also heats efficiently through much of the winter, so it's worth comparing before you buy, especially when the furnace is getting older. For homes with boilers, baseboard or no ducts, ductless mini-splits provide cooling room by room without new ductwork. We'll compare the options for your house during the estimate.

Signs Your AC Needs Repair

Call if the system blows warm or weak air, runs but can't bring the temperature down, ices up on the indoor coil or the copper line, leaks water inside, trips the breaker, hums without starting, or makes grinding or squealing noises. A dirty outdoor coil is common after a smoky summer and can cut cooling noticeably.

Repair or Replace Your AC?

Capacitors, contactors, fan motors and clogged drains are routine repairs. A failed compressor, a large refrigerant leak, or an older system that runs on R-22 refrigerant usually points toward replacement. New systems use newer, lower-impact refrigerants, and we'll explain what that means for your equipment.

What an AC Installation Involves

We size the system to your home's actual cooling load, check that the ductwork and furnace blower can move enough air, and pick an outdoor location with clearance, good drainage and protection from roof snow. Installation includes setting the condenser on a pad or stand, installing the indoor coil, running and pressure-testing refrigerant lines, evacuating the system, wiring, charging to the manufacturer's spec and confirming airflow and temperatures before we leave. Any required permit and inspection are handled by us, start to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there ice on my AC lines?

Ice usually means low airflow (a dirty filter or blocked return) or low refrigerant. Turn the cooling off, let it thaw, replace the filter and call us if it ices again.

Can I add central air if my house has a boiler?

Not without ductwork, but ductless mini-splits are a clean way to add cooling to a boiler-heated home, and they can supply some heat in spring and fall too.

How do I keep wildfire smoke out while running the AC?

Keep windows closed, run the fan, and use the highest-rated filter your system can handle. We can also look at upgraded filtration for your system.

Should I cover my outdoor AC unit in winter?

A full cover can trap moisture, so we don't recommend one for most units. Keep the unit clear of snow piles, and never cover a heat pump, which runs all winter.
