Hydronic Heat in Western Montana
Boilers heat water and circulate it through radiators, baseboard convectors or tubing in the floor. Many older Missoula houses were built around cast-iron radiators, and radiant floor heat is common in newer custom homes and shops. Hydronic heat is quiet, even and comfortable, and it doesn't blow smoke or dust around during inversion season.
Signs Your Boiler Needs Service
Watch for radiators or zones that stay cold, gurgling or banging pipes, a pressure gauge that keeps creeping up or dropping, water around the boiler or the relief valve, a pilot or burner that won't stay lit, frequent short cycling, or a boiler that needs to be reset over and over. Any carbon monoxide alarm means get out and call 911 first.
Boiler Repair
Common fixes include circulator pumps, zone valves, expansion tanks, pressure relief valves, ignition parts, controls and air trapped in the lines. We also bleed and balance systems so heat reaches every room, and we track down slow leaks before they cause damage.
Boiler Maintenance
A yearly service keeps a boiler safe and efficient. We inspect and clean the burner and heat exchanger, test combustion, check venting, verify the expansion tank and relief valve, look over pumps and zone valves, and on condensing boilers clean the condensate trap and neutralizer. Fall, before steady cold arrives, is the best time.
Repair or Replace Your Boiler?
A well-built cast-iron boiler can last a long time, so repair is often the best value while the heat exchanger is sound. Replacement makes sense when the heat exchanger leaks or cracks, repairs keep stacking up, or you want the efficiency of a modern unit. Today's modulating-condensing ("mod-con") boilers adjust their output to the weather instead of running full blast, and they work especially well with radiant floors and low-temperature systems.
What a Boiler Replacement Involves
We size the new boiler to the home's heat loss rather than copying the old one, which was often oversized. Then we plan venting (condensing boilers vent through PVC or polypropylene), set the near-boiler piping and pumps, and add clean, well-supported copper or PEX connections. We also install indirect water heaters that use the boiler to make your hot water. After start-up we purge air, set pressures and controls and test every zone. We also file the permit and schedule the inspection for you.
Homes, Businesses and New Construction
We service boilers in single-family homes, multi-unit buildings and commercial spaces, and we install hydronic and radiant heating in new construction. All brands, major or not.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should my boiler pressure gauge read?
Most residential hot-water boilers run around 12 to 15 psi cold and somewhat higher when hot, but the right number depends on your system and the height of your home. If the pressure keeps climbing toward the relief valve setting or drops near zero, call us.
Why are my radiators hot at the bottom but cold at the top?
That usually means air is trapped in the radiator or lines. Bleeding the radiator often fixes it. If it keeps coming back, there may be a leak or an issue with the air separator or fill valve.
Can a heat pump work with my boiler?
Yes. A ductless mini-split can add cooling and efficient shoulder-season heat while the boiler handles deep cold, and we can also connect a heat pump directly into your hot-water loop. See our heat pump page.
Do you work on radiant floor heating?
Yes. We service and install radiant floor systems, including the boiler, pumps, manifolds and controls.
