Signs Your Furnace Needs Service

Call for service if you notice rooms that never quite reach the thermostat setting, or a system that runs constantly to keep up. Short cycling, where the burners light and shut off again within minutes. Banging, squealing, rattling or a booming sound at ignition. A burning or electrical smell that lasts more than the first run of the season. Soot around the furnace cabinet, or a carbon monoxide alarm that sounds. A heating bill that climbs for no clear reason.

A carbon monoxide alarm is never a wait-and-see problem. Get everyone outside, call 911, and then call us.

Repair or Replace Your Furnace?

A repair is usually the right call when the furnace is mid-life, the heat exchanger is sound, and the fix is a single part such as an igniter, flame sensor, inducer motor or control board. Replacement starts to make more sense when the heat exchanger is cracked, the furnace needs a second major repair in a short span, parts for an older model are hard to get, or the house has always had cold rooms the current unit can't solve. We'll show you what we find and lay out both options plainly.

What a Furnace Installation Involves

A good install starts before the old unit comes out. We measure the house and work out its heat loss so the new furnace fits the load, then check the ductwork, return air, venting and gas line. High-efficiency condensing furnaces vent through PVC and need a condensate drain, so we plan that routing up front. Missoula sits at roughly 3,200 feet, and furnaces at this elevation need to be set up to the manufacturer's high-altitude specs. Then we set and connect the new furnace, adjust gas pressure, test for safe combustion and walk you through the thermostat and filter. We pull the permit and handle the inspection, so you don't have to.

Built for Western Montana Winters

When January nights fall well below zero, a properly sized, well-tuned furnace runs long, steady cycles instead of struggling or short cycling. Two-stage and variable-speed models run on low much of the winter for quieter, more even heat. A furnace also pairs well with a heat pump. In a hybrid system, the heat pump covers mild days and the furnace takes over in deep cold. See our heat pump page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my furnace turn on and then shut off after a few minutes?

That's short cycling. Common causes are a dirty flame sensor, a clogged filter, an overheating heat exchanger or a furnace that's too big for the house. Check the filter first; if it's clean and the cycling continues, call us to diagnose it.

Is it safe to keep running a furnace that's making a new noise?

If the noise is loud or metallic, or comes with a burning smell, turn the furnace off at the thermostat and call. A light hum or click is usually normal.

Can you replace a furnace without replacing the AC?

Usually, yes. If your air conditioner is in good shape and compatible with the new furnace's blower, we can replace the furnace alone. We'll check the match during your free estimate.

Do you install propane furnaces for homes outside town?

Yes. We install and repair natural gas, propane and electric furnaces for homes and businesses around Western Montana.
