Heating Your Home in Polson and the Mission Valley This Winter

Polson winters have their own personality. The wind coming off Flathead Lake can push cold air into every gap in a house, a lot of homes around the Mission Valley run on propane or electric heat instead of natural gas, and when something breaks on a January night, the nearest parts counter may be a long drive away. A little planning goes a long way up here.
ProCare Climate serves Polson and the surrounding Mission Valley along with Missoula, Lolo, Frenchtown, Stevensville and Hamilton. Jeremy has more than 10 years of hands-on HVAC experience in Western Montana, and here's what he'd want every Polson homeowner and business owner to think about before the real cold settles in.
Wind Is Hard on Heating Systems
A steady wind off the lake makes a house lose heat faster, which means your furnace or boiler runs longer cycles than it would in a sheltered spot. Longer run times put more wear on blower motors, igniters and burners. Wind can also cause trouble at the vent: on high-efficiency furnaces and boilers with side-wall PVC vents, gusts and drifting snow can disrupt the intake or exhaust and trip a pressure switch, shutting the heat down.
What you can do:
- Keep the area around side-wall vents clear of snow and ice after every storm.
- Replace your furnace filter on schedule so the system isn't working harder than it has to.
- Check weatherstripping on doors and windows on the windward side of the house.
Propane Homes: Plan Ahead
Many homes outside town limits heat with propane. Keep an eye on your tank gauge and schedule deliveries before you get low, especially ahead of a cold snap or a holiday weekend when delivery schedules tighten up. If you ever run a tank completely empty, call your propane supplier first; they will need to check the system for leaks before it's put back into service. (ProCare Climate doesn't relight propane systems after a tank runs empty, so your supplier is the right first call.)
Once you have fuel, a propane furnace or boiler still benefits from a yearly tune-up: cleaning the burners, checking the flame sensor and igniter, and confirming safe venting. Read more in our propane furnace winter guide.
Electric Heat and Heat Pumps Near the Lake
Electric furnaces and baseboard heat are common around Polson. They're simple, but heating elements, sequencers and breakers still fail, and an electric furnace that only partly heats is often running on fewer elements than it should. If your bills jumped or rooms never quite warm up, it's worth having it checked.
Heat pumps are another option many Mission Valley homeowners ask about. Modern cold-climate models can handle a lot of Montana winter, and they can be paired with a backup heat source for the coldest nights. If you're curious whether one makes sense for your house, see our heat pump installation page and ask for a free install estimate.
Boilers and Hot-Water Heat
Older lake homes and cabins often have boilers feeding baseboard or radiant floor heat. Before deep winter, a boiler should have its pressure, expansion tank, circulator pumps, relief valve and venting checked. If part of the house is cold while the rest is fine, an air-bound zone or a failing zone valve or circulator is a common reason. Learn more on our boiler service page.
Don't Forget Seasonal Homes and Rentals
Polson has plenty of cabins, vacation rentals and second homes that sit empty for weeks at a time. A heating failure in an empty house can mean frozen pipes before anyone notices. A few precautions help:
- Have the heating system serviced before you leave for the season.
- Set the thermostat at a safe minimum rather than turning the heat off.
- Consider a Wi-Fi thermostat or temperature alert so you know if the house gets cold.
- Make sure someone local can check on the property after a big storm or power outage.
Commercial Buildings in the Mission Valley
Shops, restaurants and offices in Polson rely on rooftop units, unit heaters and make-up air systems that work hard in winter. Jeremy works on commercial equipment as well as residential, and maintenance plans can help keep a business heated without surprise shutdowns.
