Radiant Floor Heating in Missoula & Western Montana

Radiant floor heat warms the floor itself, usually with hot water from a boiler running through tubing in or under the floor, and the floor gently heats the room. ProCare Climate installs, repairs and services hydronic radiant floor systems in Missoula and across Western Montana, including the boiler, pumps, manifolds and controls behind them, for homes, shops, businesses and new construction. Boiler with circulator pumps and copper piping for hydronic heat, installed by ProCare Climate

How hydronic radiant floor heat works

A heat source, most often a boiler, heats water. Circulator pumps move that water to a manifold, which splits it into loops of flexible tubing set in a concrete slab or installed under the subfloor. Each loop or group of loops can be its own zone with its own thermostat, so a basement, main floor, garage or shop can run at different temperatures. Radiant can also be tied into other hot-water heat sources, including some heat pump setups.

Electric radiant mats are another option for a single bathroom or small floor. For a whole home or large space, hot-water systems are the usual choice.

Why radiant heat works well in a Montana winter

  • Even comfort: heat comes up from the whole floor instead of one register.
  • Quiet: no blower cycling on and off.
  • Warm floors: tile, concrete and basement slabs stop feeling like ice.
  • Less air movement: no ducts blowing dust around.
  • Zoning: different areas can run at different temperatures.

Where radiant floor heat fits best

  • New construction: the easiest time. Tubing goes into the slab or under the subfloor before finished flooring goes down. If you're building, talk to us before the slab is poured.
  • Basements and slabs: a natural fit that turns a cold basement into usable space.
  • Shops and garages: a heated slab keeps a workspace comfortable and helps melt off snow tracked in from the driveway.
  • Remodels: possible in many homes, often from below through an unfinished basement ceiling. It depends on the house, so we'd want to look in person.

Things to know before you decide

  • It's slower to respond. Radiant works best holding a steady temperature rather than big nighttime setbacks.
  • Flooring matters. Tile, stone and concrete move heat well. Thick carpet and pad slow it down. Check what your flooring manufacturer allows.
  • It doesn't cool. For air conditioning, you'll need a separate system such as a heat pump or central AC.
  • The heat source matters. The same boiler can often run an indirect water heater for your household hot water. Good design is what makes the system comfortable and efficient.
  • Permits and inspections. New heating systems and boiler installs typically need a permit, and we pull permits and schedule inspections for you.

Radiant floor repair and service

If you already have radiant heat and something isn't right, watch for:

  • One zone staying cold while others are fine (often a valve, thermostat, pump or air issue)
  • Gurgling, which can mean air in the lines
  • A boiler pressure gauge that keeps creeping up or dropping
  • Drips or leaks at the manifold or around the boiler
  • A boiler that locks out or short-cycles

We service the whole system: boiler, pumps, zone valves, manifolds, mixing and controls. A yearly boiler service in the fall is the best way to keep radiant heat reliable. See our boiler service page and boiler winter prep guide.

Radiant Floor Heat FAQ

Can radiant floor heat be added to an existing home?

Often, yes, especially where there's an unfinished basement ceiling to work from below. It depends on the house, so we'd look in person and give you a free install estimate.

What heats the water for a radiant floor?

Usually a boiler running on natural gas or propane. Radiant can also be tied into other hot-water heat sources, including some heat pump setups.

Can the same boiler make my hot water?

In many cases, yes. An indirect water heater uses the boiler to heat household water, with the tank acting as one more zone.

Does radiant floor heat provide air conditioning?

No. Radiant floors only heat. For cooling, you'd add a separate system such as a heat pump or central AC.

One zone of my radiant floor is cold. What's wrong?

It's often a zone valve, thermostat, pump or trapped air. Call us at 406-546-1289 and we'll track it down.
