What counts as an HVAC emergency?

In a Montana winter, losing heat is more than an inconvenience. Call right away if:

  • Your furnace, boiler or heat pump has stopped heating and the house is getting cold
  • The system keeps shutting off, locking out or needing to be reset
  • A breaker for the furnace or heat pump trips again right after you reset it
  • You hear new banging, screeching or grinding from the equipment
  • There's water around the boiler, relief valve or water heater
  • A business, rental or multi-unit building has lost heat and tenants or staff are affected
  • Air conditioning fails during a heat wave and someone in the home is vulnerable to heat

If you're not sure whether it can wait until morning, call and ask.

Safety first: gas smell or CO alarm

If you smell gas (a rotten-egg smell) or propane, don't troubleshoot. Don't flip switches or light anything. Get everyone outside and call your gas utility, your propane supplier or 911 from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get out and call 911. Once the emergency responders say it's safe, call us to find and fix the cause.

Quick checks before you call

Some no-heat problems have simple causes. If there's no gas smell and no alarm, it's worth checking:

  1. Thermostat: set to Heat, a few degrees above room temperature, with fresh batteries.
  2. Power: the furnace switch near the unit is on, and no breaker has tripped.
  3. Filter: a badly clogged filter can make a furnace shut itself off.
  4. Fuel: on propane, check the tank gauge. If it ran empty, contact your propane supplier.
  5. Outside vent pipes: snow and ice can block the white plastic pipes on high-efficiency furnaces and boilers.

For more detail, see what to check when your furnace won't turn on. If those checks don't fix it, call us.

Emergency repairs we handle

  • Furnaces: gas, propane and electric. See furnace repair.
  • Boilers and hot-water heat, including multi-unit building boilers. See boiler service.
  • Radiant floor heat and the boiler, pumps and controls behind it.
  • Indirect water heaters that make hot water from your boiler.
  • Heat pumps, including heat pumps tied into hot-water heat. See heat pumps.
  • Air conditioning. See AC repair.
  • Commercial equipment: rooftop units, unit heaters and make-up air.

We work on all brands, major or not. When a repair isn't the best value, we'll tell you so and explain your options, and replacement systems start with a free install estimate.

While you wait: protecting your home

  • On very cold nights, open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls so warmer room air reaches the pipes.
  • If you use a portable heater, follow the manufacturer's instructions and keep it well clear of anything that can burn. Never use an oven, grill or camp stove to heat the house.
  • Write down what the equipment is doing, and take a photo of any blinking status light and the code chart on the panel door. It helps us arrive ready.

Homes, businesses and rentals

Heat loss at a shop, office, restaurant or apartment building affects a lot of people at once. ProCare Climate works on residential and commercial heating and cooling, including multi-unit boiler systems. See our multi-unit boiler guide and commercial heating tips.
